I stumbled on this by accident while ‘googling’ old tunes from my collection, thanks for a great account which settled an argument from back in the day ..turns out I was right all along that the ’sample’ wasnt a sample at all ..also thanks for the info that my ‘prized original’ white label copy is in fact a bootleg!

18 Strings is one of those rare tracks that seems timeless, still sounds as good now as it did back then where some huge tunes from the same time sound so dated now.

Top marks for a great tune thats been played at full volume at many a party even if I have been playing a bloody bootleg all these years!

I love this mix for it’s attitude and the fact it sounds in keeping with the original ethos of the song.I have been a lifelong Sputnik fan and came across your website by accident and listened to the song…..you’ve made a truly great mix.Reading about how you made it was very interesting and you have great skills…..much kudos to you sir.

A fantastic read, It was this and other mixes by Paul that provided the drive for me to bombard DMC with mixes, and finally succeed if only for 3-4 times before moving on. I spent many hours trying to work out how the mixes had been constructed before spending the next 6 months wages on an 8 track reel to reel , sampler or whatever I thought it would take to get near to Paul’s standard of mixing. It was a never ending chase unfortunately.

Hey Paul - just discovered your website, & very good it is ! Just thought i’d drop you a line to add my 2 penny worth of praise to the rest. I remember back in the early 80’s when you took over the residency in Juliets standing and watching the live mixing you did back then and the comments of one Geoff king whom i partnered for a while ” I can’t compete with this guy - he’s the ultimate technician” whilst Geoff, Steve Tong, myself and the other DJ’s at the time could just about perform acceptable “running mixes” we certainly couldn’t match your technical ability in what was then, and from what i’ve heard over the years , still is your unquestionable musical and technical ability - all the best - Paul
